When Doris was born, they called her "The Million Dollar Baby,” She was the only child of James Buchanan Duke, founder of the American Tobacco Company. According to legend, in 1925, while on his deathbed, he told his daughter: "Trust no one. They all want your money."
She was only 12.
Doris turned out to be a shrewd investor. She died filthy rich in 1993 at age 80. The philanthropist from Jersey left behind a $1.3 billion estate that included a Belle Epoque diamond, a camel, two horses, and a donkey. She was buried at sea but not before they plucked out her eyeballs …
